The Next Generation of Unity - South Central Unity Churches Association

Hey Everyone!
So I was just taking another look at the LC guide. After all the discussion this weekend about how to go about getting NGU going, I thought it merited another glance.

I think there are some really great suggestions that we can all employ to get ourselves motivated and moving. The first of which is the suggestion about mission and vision statements. I was wondering what you all think about this. This is what I'm thinking I could do:

Set an initial meeting time that works for Brittany Stone, Fancy Ruff-Wagner (the other team leaders) and I and then publicize it to the church. The goal in publicizing the meeting would be to invite all people who are interested in supporting NGU within the church to participate in the development of a mission and vision statement as well as goals and objectives. Ideally, this meeting would include the church leadership, ie. ministers, youth directors, LUTs, etc.

What do you all think about this? Is this something worth trying? Something you all would be willing to do in your own churches? If so, this should be on our list of action steps (Carly, Donna, we should get together on this.)

Anyway, please let me know what you think, as I will be knocking this idea around among others.

I think that is a great idea Terryn! In Dallas, we will hold a planning meeting for members and those who are interested first and then come to our ministers to discuss our game plan. In the past, we've had these planning meetings for members and waited too long to have a follow up event.

This time, I want to hand out an event calendar for the group to take with them. If you are just setting up try and decide on a concrete date for your next event during the meeting. Give people something to look forward to or something that they can contribute to the next event (Jane Doe can you please bring snacks or call and invite our newbies?). When people take action for the good of the group it becomes their own and fosters a sense of belonging. This is a product of all of our collective efforts. Thanks so much for posting this Terryn! It's given me some good ideas and has given me the jumpstart I needed this week! Let's do a webcam chat sometime this week or next to discuss structure and action steps. Maybe after we have our planning meetigs with our group?

Talk to ya soon,

Carly

Hi Terryn and Carly,
The ideas/steps you have outline are fantastic, and to help you out, there is a much more in-depth and updated resource than the Local Connections guide (which is being retired). Its replacement is called NGU^3: evolve, support, serve. It is currently free from the Association, by emailing me at ngu@unity.org.
Peace,
Rachel
